Oscar-winning actress Patricia Neal died Sunday of lung cancer at her home in Edgartown, Mass., She embarked on a remarkable career comeback after suffering three strokes at age 39 that left her in a coma for three weeks.She was 84. Neal emerged in her early 20s on Broadway, winning a Tony for her debut in Lillian Hellman’s Another Part of the Forest before moving to Hollywood.Neal won an Academy Award for her role in the 1963 film Hud alongside Paul Newman and boasted a long list of stage, film and TV credits over decades.
Neal’s personal life was often as dramatic as anything she did onscreen. She once had an affair with actor Gary Cooper with whom she starred in The Fountainhead and Bright Leaf but it ended in disaster after his wife found out.She was married to the British writer Roald Dahl for 30 years with whom she had five children. Their son suffered severe injuries after being hit by a taxi when he just four months old and their oldest child, daughter Olivia, died from the measles.
When Neal was pregnant with their fifth child in 1965 she suffered three massive strokes and was in a coma for three weeks, but eventually recovered.Not only did her daughter Olivia Dahl die due to complications from measles at the age of 7 years old, but her son Theo Dahl survived being hit by a taxi while in his carriage when he was a mere 4 months old. In 1965 at the age of 39, Neal suffered several strokes, which left her in a coma for 21 days.
